Situated in Nakuru County, the Olkaria geothermal station, one of six already operational in the Olkaria area, commenced construction in April 2017, reaching completion and initiating commercial power production in 2019. The geothermal system at Olkaria encompasses a two-phase reservoir embedded within 0.9-1.65 million-year-old fractured trachyte and rhyolite rocks at depths ranging from 600M to 3000M. In fields like Olkaria East, Olkaria Domes, and Olkaria North East, wells with a nominal diameter of 8 inches are drilled into the reservoir, casing off the upper 700M-1200M to prevent cold fluid inflow into the bore. These wells yield a mix of 75% water and 25% steam, with cyclone separators facilitating the separation process. Dry steam is then piped to the powerhouse, while separated water is reinjected into the reservoir, constituting a comprehensive geothermal energy extraction and utilization system.
